Description
The Case Study of Vanitas (Vanitas no Carte) is a dark fantasy supernatural mystery anime series directed by Tomoyuki Itamura and produced by Studio BONES, adapted from the manga by Jun Mochizuki. Set in an alternate 19th-century steampunk Paris where humans and vampires exist in a fragile, uneasy truce, the story follows Noe Archiviste, a young vampire sent to the capital in search of the legendary Book of Vanitas—a cursed grimoire rumored to corrupt and destroy vampire kind. During an airship voyage, Noe encounters Vanitas, an eccentric, self-proclaimed human doctor who wields the fabled grimoire not as a weapon of destruction, but as a curative tool to restore “curse-bearers,” vampires whose true names have been corrupted by a malevolent affliction. Despite mutual suspicion and sharply contrasting personalities, Noe and Vanitas form an uneasy partnership as they navigate the gilded salons and shadowy underworld of Paris. Together, they confront rogue vampires, enigmatic beast attacks, the zealous holy knights of the Chasseurs, and the sinister machinations of the Charlatan parade, gradually uncovering the dark secrets surrounding the Vampire of the Blue Moon and the heavy cost of Vanitas’s crusade.
