Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) is a charming animated coming-of-age fantasy film written, produced, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli, adapted from Eiko Kadono’s 1985 novel. The narrative follows Kiki, a spirited thirteen-year-old trainee witch who, according to witch tradition, must leave home for a full year of independent living to hone her craft. Accompanied by her cynical talking black cat, Jiji, Kiki flies on her broomstick to the picturesque seaside city of Koriko. Struggling initially to adapt to the unfamiliar urban lifestyle, she finds shelter with a kind bakery owner and launches a flying courier delivery service to earn a living. However, as self-doubt, creative burnout, and the emotional pressures of growing up take their toll, Kiki suddenly loses her ability to fly and communicate with Jiji. To regain her magical powers and rediscover her true identity, Kiki must overcome loneliness, find inner confidence, and build genuine bonds of friendship within her new community. Celebrated for its gentle optimism, vibrant coastal scenery, and relatable exploration of adolescence and creative vulnerability, the film stands as one of Studio Ghibli’s most cherished classics.
