Akira (1988) is a groundbreaking cyberpunk animated science fiction masterpiece directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, based on his critically acclaimed manga series of the same name. Set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo decades after World War III was triggered by a mysterious cataclysmic explosion, the city is plagued by corruption, anti-government protests, and brutal gang warfare. The story follows Shotaro Kaneda, the fearless leader of a teenage capsule bōsōzoku motorcycle gang, whose life unravels when his childhood friend and fellow gang member, Tetsuo Shima, crashes into an escaped psychic child during a high-speed clash. After being captured by the covert military division led by the ruthless Colonel Shikishima, Tetsuo awakens terrifying, uncontrollable telekinetic powers linked to the enigmatic project “Akira.” As Tetsuo’s newfound abilities mutate into catastrophic megalomania and threaten to obliterate Neo-Tokyo all over again, Kaneda must confront his former companion in a desperate attempt to avert total annihilation. Globally renowed for its pioneering fluid animation, hyper-detailed dystopian world-building, and an iconic percussive score by Geinoh Yamashirogumi, this landmark anime classic is presented here in high definition with complete English subtitles and English dubbed audio options.
