5 Centimeters per Second (2007) is a bittersweet romantic drama anime film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and produced by CoMix Wave Films. Unfolding across three interconnected vignettes spanning from the early 1990s to the late 2000s, the story traces the evolving connection between Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara, two close childhood friends who bond over their quiet temperaments and frequent relocations. When Akari moves away to Tochigi after elementary school, the pair keep in touch through handwritten letters, but the physical separation begins to widen the emotional rift between them. A harsh winter train journey taken by Takaki to see Akari one last time before his family moves even further south to Tanegashima marks both the emotional zenith and the beginning of a lingering, unresolved separation. As the years progress through high school and into an isolated, melancholic adulthood in Tokyo, Takaki finds himself spiritually adrift and unable to commit to the present, haunted by the memory of a first love that drifted away at the speed of falling cherry blossoms.
