Description
From Up on Poppy Hill (2011) is a nostalgic historical coming-of-age drama directed by Goro Miyazaki, written by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa, and produced by Studio Ghibli. Set in Yokohama in 1963 as Japan prepares to host the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics, the nation is caught between modern redevelopment and shedding the painful memories of World War II. The story follows Umi Matsuzaki, a diligent high school girl who manages her family’s boarding house and raises signal maritime flags each morning overlooking the harbor in memory of her naval captain father, who was killed in the Korean War. At school, Umi meets Shun Kazama, a charismatic and headstrong member of the journalism club, and together they rally the student body to renovate and save the Latin Quarter, an eccentric, beloved clubhouse threatened with demolition by city modernizers. As Umi and Shun grow closer through their shared preservation efforts, a tender romance blossoms, only to be challenged by an unexpected revelation from their parents’ wartime pasts that throws their lineage and future together into doubt. Rooted in themes of generational healing, post-war reconstruction, and the warmth of community, the film offers a quiet, heartfelt tribute to youth and historical remembrance.
