In This Corner of the World (2016) is a deeply moving historical drama anime film directed by Sunao Katabuchi and produced by MAPPA, adapted from Fumiyo Kono’s acclaimed manga. Set in wartime Japan during the 1930s and 1940s, the story follows Suzu Urano, an innocent, daydreaming young woman with a passion for drawing who leaves her hometown of Hiroshima to marry Shusaku Hojo, a naval law clerk living in the nearby port city of Kure. As a newly arrived daughter-in-law, Suzu throws herself into running the household, finding inventive ways to stretch meager food rations, sew makeshift clothes, and maintain warmth and good cheer despite the crushing hardships of World War II. However, as the conflict intensifies, Kure is subjected to relentless aerial bombardments, and Suzu is confronted with unimaginable personal grief, permanent loss, and physical trauma that threaten to shatter her gentle spirit. Balancing everyday resilience with the quiet devastation of civilian survival in the shadow of the atomic bomb, the film offers an intimate and haunting tribute to the endurance of ordinary human life amidst catastrophic circumstances.
